Enormous spaces, endless walkways, wide sluices, cryptic signs; all combined with miles of cables and pipes. They form a technical universe that radiates a cool logic. A hidden world, known only to a few and yet which has a huge influence on our day to day lives, absolutely essential in fact. Nuclear power plants, coal-fired power stations, storage facilities for nuclear waste and other energy systems can at the same time intimidate and fascinate a visitor. They seem to have originated from other planets or science-fiction films. Strange worlds, emanating a cool logic; cathedrals of industry, temples of an energy-guzzling society. Energy systems are hidden universes, accessible to very few people, highly protected against accidents and terroristic attacks. My intention is to capture these plants on film in an artistic manner. Pure information is in the background. The idea is more about perspectives, colours and shapes. What I am proposing is to dissipate technology into aesthetics, at least to a certain extent. Only the caption will remind the beholder of what he or she is contemplating: A highly complex system whereof our modern life depends. Mächtige Hallen, endlose Gänge, dicke Schleusen, kryptische Zeichen, alles verbunden mit einem Gewirr aus Kabeln und Röhren. Auf aussenstehende Betrachter können Atomanlagen, Kohlekraftwerke, Endlagerstätten und andere Energieanlagen einschüchternd wirken – und gleichzeitig faszinierend. Sie scheinen wie von einem anderen Planeten oder aus einem Science-Fiction-Film. Fremde Welten, die eine kalte Logik ausstrahlen, Kathedralen der Industrie, Tempel einer energiefressenden Gesellschaft. Es sind verborgene, oft hochgradig gegen Unfälle und Terrorismus gesicherte Universen, zu denen nur wenige Zugang haben. Meine Absicht ist es, diese Energiezentren auf künstlerische Art sichtbar zu machen. Die reine Information steht dabei im Hintergrund. Vielmehr geht es mir um Perspektiven, Farben und Formen. Ich suche die Auflösung der Technik in der Ästhetik. Erst die Information zum Bild soll den Betrachter wieder daran erinnern, was er da sieht: Ein hochkomplexes System, von welchem unser modernes Leben abhängt, Energieanlagen, die uns gleichzeitig dienen und die uns bedrohen können. Salles énormes, couloirs sans fin, sas massifs, signes cryptiques, tout est connecté par un enchevêtrement de câbles et de tuyaux. Les centrales nucléaires et hydro-électriques, les aires de stockage définitif et les autres bâtiments d’énergie peuvent intimider un visiteur et, en même temps, le fasciner. Ils semblent venir d’une autre planète. Des mondes étrangers desquels émane une logique froide. Des univers cachés de haute sécurité, auxquels peu de gens sont admis. Mon intention est de rendre visible, d’une manière artistique, ces centrales d’énergie. Dans ce processus, l’information en tant que telle passe au second plan. Il s’agit plutôt de photographier des perspectives, des couleurs et des formes. Ce que je cherche, c’est la dissolution de la technique dans l’esthétique. Le spectateur se trouve confronté à un système ultracomplexe duquel dépend notre vie moderne, un système qui, en même temps, nous fascine et nous fait peur.
