Cathedrals of modern age
Photographer Luca Zanier casts a look behind the curtains of the energy industry. His images open the doors to hidden universes, usually inaccessible to the public, highly protected as they are against accidents and terrorism. Abandoned worlds of concrete and steel reveal themselves to us, cathedrals of the modern age, temples of an energy-devouring society that radiate a cold logic. His images of imposing halls, endless corridors, massive floodgates and cryptic signs are as intimidating as they are fascinating. They seem extraterrestrial and surreal at times, as if taken from a science fiction movie; their aesthetics make us forget that we are looking at highly complex industrial systems. Systems that serve as well as threaten us.
**Bill Kouwenhoven** is an international critic and photo journalist. He is a frequent contributor to numerous contemporary photography journals including Afterimage, Aperture, British Journal of Photography, Foto 8 etc. He is the author of several photography books, amongst others the major survey of contemporary Spanish photography and video, Nuevas Historias. He lives and works in Berlin and New York.
**André Küttel**, *1969, is a freelance film, radio and stage author, who lives and works in Zurich. Originally he was a qualified graphic designer and up until 1998 partner in an advertising agency, which is where he got to know Luca Zanier. As a long-standing friend he has accompanied Zanier‘s project Space and Energy since its inception with his art and words.

Der Fotograf Luca Zanier wirft in seinem ersten Buch einen Blick hinter die Fassaden der Energieindustrie. Er öffnet die Tore zu verborgenen, oft hochgradig gesicherten Universen, zu denen nur wenige Zugang haben. Fremde Welten, die eine kalte Logik ausstrahlen, Tempel einer energiefressenden Gesellschaft. Die Aufnahmen von mächtigen Hallen, endlosen Gängen, wuchtigen Schleusen und kryptischen Zeichen wirken einschüchternd und faszinierend zugleich. **Bill Kouwenhoven** ist Fotokritiker und Journalist. Er schreibt u. a. für «Aperture», «British Journal of Photography», «Photonews», «European Photography» sowie «Camera» und ist Autor zahlreicher Fotobücher. Er lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und New York.
**André Küttel**, geb. 1969, stammt aus Luzern. Nach einer Ausbildung zum Grafiker war er als Artdirector tätig. Seit 1998 arbeitet er als freier Autor für Radio, Film und Bühne. André Küttel lebt und arbeitet in Zürich.
