Über Privilegien, Risiken und Chancen

Macht ist ein grosses Wort. Mit ihr einher geht viel Positives, aber genauso Negatives. Doch per se ist Macht zuerst einmal neutral, weder gut noch böse. Grundsätzlich dienen Machtdynamiken dazu, Begebenheiten zu verändern und Ziele zu erreichen. Im besten Falle stärken Personen mit Macht ihre Mitmenschen, die Gesellschaft oder Systeme. Doch Macht ist bei Missbrauch auch die Ursache von Ohnmacht, Wut und Verzweiflung.

Machtbeziehungen durchziehen Partnerschaften, Institutionen und Staaten überall auf der Welt, denn sie sind eine unsichtbare Eigenschaft sozialer Beziehungen. Wer entscheidet, wer besitzt, wer Zugang und Mitsprache erhält, wer respektiert wird und wer nicht; das alles ist geprägt durch historische, gesellschaftliche, kulturelle und strukturelle Gegebenheiten. Schon von klein auf wird eine Person durch die in ihrem Umfeld herrschenden Machtverhältnisse geprägt. Ihre Lebensmöglichkeiten und Erfahrungen hängen schon sehr früh davon ab.

Whether it's the UN Security Council in New York or a fusion reactor in the south of France: with a fine sense for unusual perspectives, Luca Zanier creates new views of familiar but often difficult-to-access places for the audience. Centers of power, energy plants, and cityscapes are transformed into precise through-composed images with an abstract charm.

Luca Zanier's photographs have been shown in over 100 exhibitions around the world and have won several awards. His artistic work can now be seen for the first time in a comprehensive exhibition at Photobastei Zurich.

Civilization: The Way We Live Now is a major exhibition, featuring the work of 100 of the world’s finest photographers. It addresses and illuminates major aspects of our increasingly global 21st century civilization. It stresses the fact that contemporary civilization is an extremely complex collective enterprise. Never before in human history have so many people been so interconnected, and so dependent on one another. In science and art, at work and play, we increasingly live the collective life. The Olympic Games, the giant Airbus, CERN, MRI, the Trident Submarine, Wikipedia, the Academy Awards, the International Space Station, Viagra, the laptop computer and the smartphone... However we feel about any of them, none of these complex phenomena would have been possible without superlatively coordinated efforts involving highly educated, highly trained, highly motivated, highly connected people.

Licht ist in der Fotografie einer der wichtigsten Faktoren für ein gelungenes Bild. Mit Licht wird das Bild modelliert: Farben, Formen, Kontraste, die Stimmung, die gesamte Aussage. Seit Jahren beschäftigt sich der Zürcher Fotograf Luca Zanier mit Räumen – oftmals grosse, repräsentative und funktionale Räume, die er aus einem anderen Blickwinkel zeigt. Immer ohne Menschen und mit einem hohen ästhetischen Anspruch. Mischlichtsituationen mit Tages- und Kunstlicht sind der Normalfall. Wie geht man mit Mischlicht um? Gibt es den perfekten Moment? Was passiert in der Nachbearbeitung? Wie er seine Bilder erarbeitet, zeigt er anhand von mehreren Beispielen: von der Planung, über die Umsetzung bis zur Nachbearbeitung.

One of the 21st century’s central questions is how we can negotiate our identity in an ever more complex world and how a globalized society can take diversity into account. From global contexts through to family ties, 20 international artists show a wide range of different aspects in abstract and concrete photographs and moving images. During two years I followed the energetic reconstruction of the historic building at Bahnhofstrasse 53 to document the labour. The publication shows an artistic insight into the deconstruction and construction work and a documentary part with the final state including the new utilisation of the property. The counter hall and the former strongroom have been opened to public after renovation.

The exhibition "Underground - The Spectacle of the Invisible" focuses on the world under the ground, that moves between possibility, idea and necessity. Prints from my series "Space and Energy" and "Corridors of Power" are part of this exhibition at the Museum für Gestaltung Zurich.

The series "Corridors of Power" has been awarded with the "Coup de coeur ARTE actions culturelles" prize at the festival Les Boutographies in Montpellier.
One of the images will enter into the ARTE art collection.

Atomic Surplus is a multi-faceted project that examines what it means to live in the birthplace of the atomic bomb. As centerpiece of the Atomic Surplus project, this group exhibition sets the tone for its auxiliary programs and publications. The work of 12 international artists represents a variety of topics and viewpoints. Presented in various media, the artworks depict everything from the first atomic bomb tests to nuclear waste facilities to the thriving wildlife in Chernobyl to the meltdown in Fukushima to the promise of nuclear power. Atomic Surplus does not take a position on the nuclear issue, but exposes audiences to a range of imagery and ideas. A color catalog accompanies the exhibition, with short essays from artists, scholars, historians, and others.
